FODMAPs stands for Fermentable Oligo-saccharides, Discaccharides, Mono-saccharides, and Polyols. Got that?
To put it simply, FODMAPs are “fast food” for bacteria and contribute to gas, bloating, and discomfort in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome and certain other gastrointestinal conditions.
The low FODMAP diet, developed by researchers at Monash University in Australia is the first evidenced-based diet shown to help patients with irritable bowel syndrome. This diet is meant to be a temporary and best carried out under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
